There are a few mobile services that travel to areas with families who may not able to access a local early learning service, this kind of service is designed to informally build links and introduce early learning to those in an isolated community.
Playdays was originally set-up by Waitakere Council in response to areas in West Auckland that had isolation issues in regards to reaching early learning services. It is now funded to run in the Massey and Henderson area by the Henderson/Massey local board. An experienced preschool educator sets up a special learning event for prechoolers in various parks in summer and public spaces in winter. This project has run for several years, to gather a groups of disconnected and often isolated families together to help form community links. In one location it has transformed into a special transition-to-school playgroup on school grounds for an area in need. This is a workable model of how a mobile services can find isolated families and bring them together to build-up the local community and benefit children. More information here in current Playdays.
The Play Truck has two co-ordinators drive a truck full of resources to locations and provide play experiences that promote the value of early learning, they show parents how they can support their children to learn. Parents visit early learning services in their area and build relationships with children and their families to help them to continue attending. The Play Truck concept is an innovation by Counties Manukau Kindergarten Association which saw the need for an informal early childhood education experience that increases participation for many vulnerable families, and it has certain geographical spots to target. The Play Truck was funded by the Ministry of Education and the running costs are met by CMKA. Read more about the Playtruck.
